Model Maker 1:48 decal set - the Dutch F-16A, 1994 display aircraft

A decal set in 1:48 scale from the brand Model Maker for a model of the F-16A Fighting Falcon of the Dutch Air Force in the scheme of the 1994 display machine. It is not a model or a part of one - the sheet serves to mark a kit that is already built and painted. The F-16A version is the original single-seat variant of the Fighting Falcon, so reach for a matching kit with a single-seat cockpit.

Why display machines differ from service ones

Aircraft shown at air shows were given special finishes for a single season. The artwork often runs across the whole fuselage and wings and is designed to work in flight from several hundred meters away - on a model it therefore reads strongly and decides the overall impression more than the shade of the base color does. A model of such a machine has the further advantage of being datable exactly.

Applying large-area decals

With large elements, care counts double. The surface has to be glossy and free of dust, because every speck shows under a thin film as a lump. Let the decal only soften in warm water and transfer it together with its paper, so it does not roll up. Slide it on the model over a film of water, never dry. Once it sits, blot the water away from the center toward the edges, so no bubble is left under the film. Dose the softener in small amounts and let it work by itself. Once dry, the matte or satin overcoat follows and evens out the sheen of the whole model.
