An accessory resin set in 1:48 scale with an ejection seat of the ACES II type. It is not a model of an aircraft but a replacement for the seat from the base kit. The seat is the most closely watched detail of an open cockpit, because it lies directly under the slid-back canopy.
The ACES II is an American ejection seat introduced at the end of the 1970s, which became the standard in a whole range of combat aircraft. It is used in machines such as the A-10, the F-15 and the F-16 and in heavy bombers, and it is designed to allow escape even at zero altitude and zero speed, that is on the ground itself. The seat has a characteristic shaped shell, prominent straps, a control handle and a system of limb restraints. It is precisely these features that tend to be only shallowly suggested in injection-molded plastic, because the mold cannot undercut them.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, so that any residue of mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting block under the seat pan off with a saw and sand the surface flat, so that the seat does not sit proud in the cockpit. Sand wet and with breathing protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting. The seat is usually painted with a dark base, over which go the different shades of the straps, the cushion and the handle; a dark wash and fine drybrushing on the edges give it depth. It pays to finish the seat away from the model and fit it only at the end, so that it is not damaged during handling.
The set is an accessory for a build, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
