A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale. A detail set for sharpening a model of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter supersonic fighter in the C and J versions. The parts are etched from thin metal sheet and serve to replace and complete the fine details that injection-molded plastic cannot capture faithfully. The set is an aftermarket accessory, not a standalone model - it is added to the matching plastic kit of the aircraft.
The F-104 Starfighter was an American supersonic fighter with a very thin, short wing and a slender fuselage, designed for high speeds. The F-104C version served with the US Air Force as a fighter-bomber, while the F-104J was an interceptor of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The set covers both of these closely related variants.
The photo-etched parts are separated with a sharp knife on a cutting mat and bent with a photo-etch bending tool or between two rulers. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or a small amount of epoxy. The cockpit and the narrow landing gear bays of the slender Starfighter are rewarding places for photo-etched refinement. Degrease the parts before painting; metal holds paint better once a primer has been applied.
