The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American supersonic aircraft from the 1950s with an unmistakable silhouette: a very short straight wing with a sharp leading edge, a slender fuselage and a horizontal tail set at the top of the fin. The letters in the designation tell apart the two versions the set is cut for. The F-104G is the single-seat multirole variant and the most widespread member of the whole family, which served with a number of European operators. The F-104DJ is the two-seat trainer version delivered to Japan; the seats sit one behind the other under a lengthened canopy, so the shape of the glazing differs from the single-seat machine.
The masks are cut from thin Japanese paper with a lightly tacky layer. The paper can be stretched slightly around a curve, so it seats on curved glazing better than ordinary masking tape, it does not lift paint when removed and it leaves no adhesive behind. The elements are pre-cut to shape, so there is no cutting to a template directly on the model. EXPERT is the designation of the standard within this range of masks; which areas the set covers and which kit it is cut for are given by the manufacturer in the instructions.
The masks go on before spraying, onto a clean and degreased surface. Lift the element out with the tip of a knife, seat it into the frame of the glazing and press the edges down with a toothpick so that paint cannot creep under them. Apply the paint in several thin coats and direct the stream rather perpendicular to the surface than at a slant under the edge of the mask. Remove them as soon as the paint has flashed off; on a fully cured coat they peel away less willingly. Pull the mask back over itself as you do so, not straight up.
The package contains masks. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
