1:48 F4F-3 Wildcat Control Surfaces is a masking set for the control surfaces and flaps. A shadow sprayed along their outline creates the impression that the surfaces are separate and deflected.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set from Dead Design belongs neither among canopy masks nor among national insignia masks. The templates are laid on the control surfaces and flaps of a model and serve to spray a fine shadow along their outline. It is an accessory for a Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat model, not a kit.
This needs to be said straight out. The set does not modify the part in any way and does not allow a control surface to be deflected for real. It works solely with the way the eye evaluates shadow. On a real aircraft a deflected surface casts a dark stripe into the dividing gap, and it is exactly that which is imitated here with a darker sprayed color. The model stays physically the same, but in a photograph and seen from a distance it looks as if the control surfaces were separate, slightly offset parts.
The key is restraint. The shadow should be somewhat darker than the surrounding shade, not black. Adding a little of a darker tone to the base color and spraying very thinly in several passes, until the transition is just hinted at, works well. A sharp black stripe looks drawn on and kills the effect. The set is used only on a finished and cured coat of paint, before the final matte varnish. It pays to run the shadow in one consistent direction on all the control surfaces of the model, so that the impression of deflection does not contradict itself.
