Phantom FGR Mk.2 arresting hook 1:48 (Quickboost)

This resin set from the Quickboost brand of the Czech maker Aires brings a faithfully cast arresting hook for a model of the British version of the McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR Mk.2 fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an airplane model, but a detail accessory for more experienced modelers that replaces the coarser plastic part with a crisp casting with the right shape of the arm and the hook. The lowered hook under the tail of the aircraft is a prominent and clearly visible element.

The real subject

The Phantom FGR Mk.2 was the British version of the twin-engine two-seat McDonnell Douglas Phantom II multirole fighter, modified to British requirements. It served with the Royal Air Force in the fighter, attack and reconnaissance roles. The arresting hook, which the Phantom inherited from its naval origin, also allowed shortened braking on land runways fitted with an arrestor cable.

Tips for working with resin

First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release residue is removed. Cut the casting block off carefully and sand the cut surface with respiratory protection. Glue the hook with cyanoacrylate glue. For fidelity it can be brought out with a worn metallic sheen and traces of wear.
