Relief color equipment for the pilot's space of the FM-2 Wildcat carrier fighter, printed on a decal base and cut for the Hobby Boss kit in 1:48.
Responsibility details are not available.
The FM-2 came about after production of the Wildcats was taken over from Grumman by the Eastern Aircraft division of the General Motors corporation. The aim was a machine for escort carriers of the CVE class, where the deck is short and every kilogram of weight is felt. The designers therefore took two barrels away from six, lightened the airframe and fitted a more powerful nine-cylinder Wright Cyclone. The higher output called for a larger rudder, so you recognize the last Wildcat by its conspicuously drawn-out vertical tail surface. Its crews nicknamed it the wilder cat, and in the ratio of kills to its own losses it was among the best in US naval aviation.
The set on offer brings the pilot's station as a group of three-dimensionally printed cut-outs whose colors are part of the print. The instrument panel, the frames, the control consoles and the seat belts thus drop out of the painting program. The material is flexible, so it adapts even to slightly curved sides of the fuselage.
The cut-out piece is soaked in lukewarm water, slid off the carrier paper and placed on plastic painted in advance and sealed with gloss varnish. A lightly dampened brush and patient pressing into recessed places prove worthwhile; only then does the fixing coat come in turn. Obtain the Hobby Boss kit separately, as this is purely about refining the inside.
The small escort carriers protected convoys and supported landings, and their short deck gave pilots no margin. The machine therefore needed a low landing speed and obedient behavior on the edge of a stall, which the lightened airframe with its drawn-out vertical surface offered. Anyone building the model with an open cockpit will appreciate that the inside does not stay empty.
