This turned metal set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:35 scale holds the barrel of the 130 mm main gun and two 14.5 mm barrels for the Soviet Object 279 heavy tank. The metal parts have no seam from the mold parting line, they keep an exact circular cross section and the muzzles are drilled out. The set serves as a replacement for the plastic parts from the kit and does not hold the model of the vehicle itself.
Object 279 was a Soviet experimental heavy tank from the end of the 1950s. It was marked out by a completely unusual running gear with four tracks and by a rounded, almost dish-shaped hull with an anti-HEAT skirt, which was to ensure both resistance and mobility in heavy going. The main armament was a rifled 130 mm gun backed by a 14.5 mm heavy machine gun. Only a few examples were built, series production never got under way, and one of the prototypes has survived in a museum collection.
The turned barrel is fitted in place of the plastic part, which usually has to be cut off, and the hole in the mantlet or shield carefully opened out with a round file. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy, and on heavier parts it is worth reinforcing the joint. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint holds badly. We recommend blackening the muzzle and knocking back the inside to a matte finish; the outer surface takes light drybrushing with a metallic pigment and some wear at the muzzle.
