About product

Fw 190D-9 Weekend 1:48, an Eduard photo-etched set

A photo-etched set in 1:48 scale for a model of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 fighter. It is not a kit of an aircraft but an accessory for raising the level of detail, mainly in the cockpit, where plastic parts cannot capture thin instrument panels, levers and belts. The Weekend designation in the name refers to the simplified boxed edition from the same maker, which does not have photo-etched parts in its contents; the set is its intended complement. The maker is the Czech brand Eduard from Obrnice near Most.

The real subject

The Fw 190D-9 is a late version of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter in which the original air-cooled radial engine was replaced by a liquid-cooled Junkers Jumo 213 inverted V12. The change called for lengthening the forward fuselage and inserting a plug ahead of the tail surfaces for balance, which earned the aircraft the nickname Dora. The annular radiator ahead of the engine gives the aircraft a deceptively radial outline at first glance. The cockpit stayed compact and is clearly visible under the sliding canopy.

Building and painting tips

Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never tear them out. Bend them in a bending tool; on small parts two razor blades will do. They are glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a toothpick in a minimal amount: modeling cement for plastic does not hold on metal. If the set holds color printed parts, do not overspray them across the whole surface and protect them from thinners; a light coat of matte varnish is enough to even the finish out. The plastic originals the photo-etch replaces have to be sanded away completely in advance, otherwise the set will not sit down.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Fw 190D-9 in 1:48 scale
  • Owners of simplified editions with no photo-etch in their contents
  • Those who want to show the cockpit under an open canopy
  • Modelers with experience of working with photo-etch and cyanoacrylate

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It refers to the simplified boxed edition from the same maker, which does not have photo-etched parts in its basic contents. The set is intended precisely to complement it.

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory. The 1:48 Fw 190D-9 kit has to be bought separately.

Sets of this kind concentrate on the detail of the cockpit: the instrument panel, the side consoles and the seat belts. The exact contents of the fret are stated on the box.
