The set holds resin parts of external stores for models of combat aircraft in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard. The designation JDAM belongs to a guidance kit that is fitted to a classic free-fall bomb: it consists of a tail section with the controls and of aerodynamic strakes on the body of the bomb. The GBU-31(V)1/B version is based on a heavy body of roughly the two-ton category; a sister item in the same range covers a different variant, so it is good to watch the exact designation before buying. The set belongs to the Brassin resin range, with finer detail than the injection-molded plastic from a kit offers.
The principle of JDAM lies in turning an ordinary bomb into a guided weapon by adding a tail section with aerodynamic surfaces and a navigation unit working with a satellite and inertial system. From the outside the weapon is therefore recognizable precisely by the angular tail section and the longitudinal strakes on the casing, which stabilize the flight. For a modeler that means the shape of the tail is the main identifying feature, and the credibility of the whole store rests on it.
Wash the resin in lukewarm water with a detergent before painting. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not by breaking them, and level the surface on abrasive paper with respiratory protection. They are glued with cyanoacrylate; align the joint between the body and the tail section while the glue is still setting, as a tail out of line is conspicuous on a finished model. Apply a primer before painting. It pays to bring the angular surfaces of the tail section out with a light wash, so that the edges stand out.
This is an accessory for a model, not a stand-alone kit. The plastic model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
