A decal set in 1:48 scale intended for models of the Gloster Gladiator biplane fighter in the Mk.I and Mk.II versions. It is not a kit but a standalone accessory with which you can finish your own model in particular period markings. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. Avalon makes an extensive range of aircraft decals in 1:32, 1:48, 1:72 and 1:144 scale, among them a Gladiator set at the smaller 1:72 scale.
The Gloster Gladiator was the last biplane fighter of the Royal Air Force and at the same time the first British fighter with an enclosed cockpit. It was powered by an air-cooled radial engine, its armament was four machine guns, and against the older biplanes it also brought flaps. The Mk.II version differed from the Mk.I mainly in a more powerful engine and small changes to the equipment. Although it was already outdated in concept when the Second World War broke out, it took part in the fighting in Norway, over Malta, in Greece, in the Middle East and in North Africa, and it also served with other European air arms. It is exactly the variety of its service that makes the Gladiator a rewarding subject for decal sets.
A biplane has a broken-up surface with fabric covering, stiffeners and wires, so applying decals calls for patience. Treat the whole model with gloss clear first - on matte fabric, bubbles would form beneath the film. Soak the motif in lukewarm water, slide it onto a moistened area once it comes free and settle it with a soft brush. Over the ribs and fabric bays, draw the film down with a decal softener and let it settle undisturbed, even if it wrinkles for a while. Apply the decals on the wings before the interplane struts and the rigging go on, which saves you problems of access. Bring the surface into line with matte clear at the end.
