A real combat aircraft is covered with hundreds of small legends, warning marks and frames around service panels. On a model it is exactly they that make the difference between a smooth painted shell and a convincing machine: the eye reads them as a cue to scale, and thanks to them the model looks larger and richer. Sets of technical stenciling are therefore bought even for models that have their own decals in the box, because those tend to be simplified or not legible enough.
Small legends come last of all, after the large motifs of the scheme. The method is always the same: spray the painted and cured model with a gloss clear varnish, apply the large decals, let them dry and only then add the legends. Trim the carrier film as closely to the motif as possible, work with smooth-jawed tweezers and a wooden stick with a dampened end, with which the legend is carried into place. A drop of water with a trace of detergent under the decal lets the position be adjusted. Use the softener sparingly and in a weaker concentration on small motifs, because a thin film can roll up before you manage to seat it. Once dry, wash the surface and even it out with an overcoat, under which the legends blend with the paint.
