A photo-etched set for a model of the Grumman F3F-2 carrier biplane in 1:48 scale. Thin metal parts replace the parts that injection-molded plastic cannot make fine enough.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Grumman F3F was a single-seat carrier fighter biplane of the US Navy of the second half of the 1930s and remained the last biplane fighter in the service of the navy. It had an enclosed cockpit and a main landing gear that was retracted by hand into the sides of its short barrel-shaped fuselage. The F3F-2 form belongs to the later versions of the series. A model of such an aircraft is full of small features, because on a biplane even what is hidden inside on a more modern machine is visible.
Photo-etched parts are cut from thin metal sheet, so they have a thickness that cannot be achieved in an injection mold. On a small biplane in 1:48 scale the difference is especially visible, because the eye compares fine features right next to each other. The set is worked out for a model of the F3F-2 in this scale.
With a biplane, plan the procedure in advance: once you have joined the two wings, many places can no longer be reached with a hand or with tweezers. So seat the parts dry and in an order you have tried out. Separate them with a sharp blade on a hard support, as twisting will buckle the sheet. Make the folds in the scored line over a straight edge or in a bending tool. They are glued with super glue in a tiny amount. Wash the metal before painting, degrease it and go over it with a primer for metal surfaces; it is practical to paint the small parts while still on the fret.
The model of the aircraft, paints, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
