The resin set from the Metallic Details brand makes it possible to render the folded wingtips together with the inside of the fold on a model of the Grumman F9F-2 Panther carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the airplane, but an accessory. You buy the base model separately and the set adds a detail to it that cannot be made from injection-molded plastic.
Carrier-based airplanes have folding wings so that as many of them as possible fit onto the hangar deck. In the folded position the section through the wing with its spars, control rods and hydraulics is revealed, and it is exactly that view that turns an ordinary model into an engaging exhibit. A model with a folded wing also takes up considerably less room on a shelf and looks believable even without a whole diorama. An injection-molded kit usually does not deal with the section through the wing at all, so without an add-on set only a blank surface remains.
The Grumman F9F Panther was the first jet fighter from the Grumman company taken into service with the US Navy. It had a straight wing, tip tanks and one jet engine; the F9F-2 version flew with the Pratt and Whitney J42 engine, which was a license version of the British Nene type. The Panther proved itself as a sturdy and easily handled machine and became the starting point for the later swept-wing Cougar.
With resin the procedure is always the same: wash the mold release agent off, cut the casting blocks off, sand and only then glue. For cutting, a fine saw or a cutting disc in a pin vise works well, because snapping pieces off risks cracking the thin areas. Use abrasive paper wet and with respiratory protection. Make the joints with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops, and the surplus can be removed with an accelerator or sanded off. A primer before painting is an obligatory step with resin, otherwise the paint comes away even during ordinary handling.
The set is an accessory for building a model, not a standalone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
