About product

Halberstadt CL.IV 1:48 — a Mirage Hobby kit

An unassembled and unpainted plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the Polish brand Mirage Hobby. The subject is the Halberstadt CL.IV, a two-seat aircraft from the end of the First World War. According to its name, this boxing is devoted to machines employed in the Polish-Soviet War, that is the period shortly after 1918, when the newly formed Polish Air Force operated a number of aircraft of German manufacture. The contents of the package and the number of marking options on the decal sheet are given by the instructions enclosed in the package.

The real subject

The Halberstadt CL.IV belonged to the category of light two-seat aircraft in which the pilot and the observer-gunner sat close one behind the other in a single roomy cockpit. It was powered by a water-cooled inline six-cylinder engine. The structure was wooden with fabric covering and plywood skinning on the forward fuselage, which matters for a model: the surface of such a machine is not smooth metal but a combination of taut fabric with noticeable ribs and smooth plywood. Compared with older types the CL.IV was more agile and had a shorter fuselage, so it suited low-level flying. After the war ended a number of these aircraft stayed in Central and Eastern Europe and served on under new operators.

Building and painting tips

A biplane from this period is a build for patience, not for speed. First finish and paint the cockpit, because once the fuselage is closed you will not reach into it. Glue the interplane struts only after the fuselage has dried and use a simple jig: two wooden spacers that hold the upper wing at the exact height and angle. Bracing wires are best made from thin elastic thread stretched between drilled holes. For painting the fabric areas, thinned acrylics applied with an airbrush in thin coats suit well, so that the structure of the ribs stays visible. Lay the decals onto a gloss intermediate coat and close the result with a matte one, because machines of the period did not shine. Check the particular schemes and shades against the instructions in the package.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers with experience of biplanes and of rigging bracing wires.
  • For collectors of First World War aviation and of its immediate aftermath in Central Europe.
  • For builders looking for a type you do not often meet in the usual range in 1:48 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. A biplane from this period means building interplane struts and stretching bracing wires, which is work for a modeler with some practice.

The exact contents can be found in the instructions enclosed in the package.

A thin modeling cement for polystyrene applied with a brush into the joint. Keep super glue for the small accessories and any metal parts.

It is a period category of light two-seat aircraft with a crew of a pilot and a gunner. The Halberstadt CL.IV was one of the later representatives of this class.
