About product

The Hurricane Mk.I landing flaps photo-etched set in 1:48 scale

This item is a photo-etched detail set from the manufacturer Eduard focused on the landing flaps. Flaps are among the parts where the difference between plastic and photo-etching shows most. Because of the technology, a molded flap has a thickness that in miniature corresponds to several centimeters of the real structure, and underneath it is usually smooth. A photo-etched part is thin to a fraction of a millimeter and carries the rib structure, so lowered flaps look like a sheet-metal pressing and not like a plastic plate.

The real subject

The Hawker Hurricane Mk I was a British single-seat fighter with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and eight 7.7 mm machine guns in the wing. Lowered flaps are a typical sight on a machine standing on an airfield, which is why they are often built in the lowered position on models. A model with the flaps lowered feels caught at a particular moment rather than a static mockup.

How the photo-etched flaps are fitted

First the original plastic flaps are usually removed from the model and the edges are leveled with a file so that the metal part seats. Cut the photo-etched parts off the fret with a sharp knife on a hard backing, not with nippers. Form the bends and ribs in a photo-etch bending tool, or over a steel ruler; shape the small parts with round-nosed pliers. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a toothpick, and on the larger joints with slower-setting epoxy. Go over the metal with primer before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. Glue the flaps on only after the wing has had its base coat, as they bend easily.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to build a model with the landing flaps lowered
  • Builders bothered by the thickness of plastic flaps in 1:48 scale
  • More experienced modelers with the basic equipment for working with photo-etching
  • Those taking the detail of a Hurricane to competition level

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit. The model itself, glue and paints are not part of the package.

FAQ

As a rule yes. The metal flaps replace the plastic parts, so the original flap is cut off and the edge is leveled with a file.

It makes sense mainly with lowered flaps, because that is exactly where the thinness of photo-etching shows. With closed flaps the benefit all but disappears.

It is not. This is an accessory to a plastic Hurricane kit in 1:48 scale, which you have to obtain separately.

Best only after the wing has had its base coat and before the final layers. Metal flaps bend easily, so they would be in the way during further handling.
