This accessory set from CMK replaces the plastic landing gear wheels on the model of the Argentine IA-58A Pucará ground attack aircraft. It is not a model of the aircraft or a kit, but cast wheels that are fitted to the landing gear legs from an ordinary kit in 1:48 scale. The castings are shaped for the Kinetic kit.
The Pucará is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft intended for attacking ground targets and for reconnaissance from improvised strips. It was precisely the requirement to operate from unpaved runways that gave the machine an unusually tall and sturdy landing gear with bulky low-pressure tires. The wheels are therefore unusually conspicuous on this type: they are not hidden under the fuselage but hang on long legs where the viewer sees them from every angle. On a display model an uneven or over-sanded wheel therefore spoils the overall impression more than on an aircraft with a slighter landing gear.
Injection-molded tires have their parting line led across the running surface. The seam has to be sanded down and with it goes the tread, exactly where it is most visible. A cast replacement is in one piece, the running surface and the sidewall of the tire carry sharp relief, and the hub of the wheel has detail drawn out that cannot be undercut in injection-molded plastic. A wheel can also be fitted at any rotation, so you choose for yourself how the contact patch will look.
Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap, so release agent residue is removed. Cut the casting remnants off with a fine saw or a scalpel and level the surface, so the wheel seats squarely on its axle. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the tire dark gray rather than black and set the hub apart in a separate shade. At the end add a light dust pigment around the circumference; that optically settles the wheel into the ground.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
