Masking films for the cockpit and the gunner's position of the Il-2M3 ground-attack aircraft in 1:48 scale, cut for Tamiya plastic. There are two sets of national insignia masks in the package; this set does not contain decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The rear gunner turned the Ilyushin Il-2 from a target into a difficult one. To fit him into the armored shell, however, the glazed area of the cockpit stretched to a length no single-seat fighter has. A model in 1:48 scale thus gets a canopy running almost to the middle of the fuselage and with it framing that extends across several parts at once.
The shape of this cockpit is angular, made up of flat panes set into thick bars. The ratio between the area of glass and the area of frame works out unfavorably, and that is exactly where a die-cut film brings the greatest saving of time: every strip is a different length and when tape is applied by hand the edges never meet as precisely as on a machine-cut shape. The masks in the set are for both sides, so the inside of the frames can be sprayed separately.
Sprayed stars look more convincing on matte camouflage than a decal, because they have neither a glossy carrier film nor a visible edge. Count on the Soviet star usually having a white or red border, which is done in a second pass, and the second set of masks in the package is exactly for that case. Give the paint time between the passes, otherwise the border smears into the main area.
