About product

Saab J 35 Draken 1:48, photo-etched steel seat belts (Eduard)

Seat belts are a detail everyone sees in an open cockpit and at the same time the one kits handle worst. This set from the Czech firm Eduard is the answer in steel: the photo-etched belts are thinner than plastic ones, but unlike brass they have a stiffness that lets them hold the chosen shape after bending. A belt can thus be thrown over the edge of the seat or left to hang loose onto the cushion and it will stay in position, which is exactly the small untidiness that reads as realistic. The parts are color-printed, so they are not repainted.

The real subject

The Saab 35 Draken was a Swedish supersonic fighter with a characteristic double delta wing, which combined good agility with room for fuel and equipment. It came about in the 1950s as an interceptor intended to defend Swedish airspace and to operate from improvised surfaces, including stretches of road. Besides the Swedish Air Force it was used by Denmark, Finland and Austria, which operated the machine for a very long time. The cockpit with its classic analog equipment and sturdy ejection seat is a rewarding subject for modelers.

Usage tips

Photo-etched steel calls for a sharp blade: cut the parts on glass and level the burrs with a file. Shape the belt gradually with your fingers and tweezers, in small steps, so that natural waves arise instead of sharp creases. It is glued with a spot of gel cyanoacrylate; an excess would flood the printing. Color-printed parts are not painted, only evened out once dry with a matte coat, which suppresses the sheen of the metal. A little dark wash in the folds and a gentle dry brush over the edges will give a belt a worn look.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of models with an open cockpit in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who object to flat plastic belts from a mold
  • Anyone interested in the Swedish Air Force of the Cold War
  • Beginners in working with photo-etched parts, for whom belts are a good first step

This is an accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Photo-etched steel is stiffer, so after shaping it holds its shape and a belt has no tendency to straighten out. With freely hanging belts that is a noticeable difference.

No, the parts are color-printed. Once glued on it is enough to even the surface out with a matte coat and, if you wish, to emphasize the folds with a wash.

The belts are designed for the seat of a particular kit. Before buying, check that the set matches the model you are building.

A small amount of gel cyanoacrylate applied with a toothpick. Plastic cement will not join metal and an excess would damage the printing.
