The real subject

The Yakovlev Yak-9 was a Soviet single-engined fighter of the Second World War, following on in design from the Yak-7. The machine had a mixed structure with metal wing spars, and a cockpit canopy with a rounded windscreen and a sliding middle section. The frames are narrow and very small on a model in 1:48 scale, so it pays to mask with a cut film instead of tape cut by hand. The cockpit is also clearly visible, because Soviet machines are often built with the canopy slid back.

How to use the mask

• Separate the film from the backing with the tip of a scalpel and stick it on the degreased clear canopy.
• Press the outline down with a wooden toothpick, so that the edge beds down everywhere.
• Cover the open areas with masking tape or with masking fluid.
• First spray the shade of the frames, then the color of the airframe, always in thin coats.
• Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, at a sharp angle to the surface.
