1:48 Ki-46 III KAI Dinah is a Dead Design masking set for the Mitsubishi Ki-46-III KAI reconnaissance aircraft converted into an interceptor, in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set is listed for the converted version of the Dinah designated KAI and serves to cover the surfaces that are to stay untouched during painting: on this machine that concerns mainly the framing of the glazing. A sprayed frame looks different from one painted over with a brush: it has a sharp edge and the same texture as the rest of the finish.
The original Ki-46 was a fast reconnaissance aircraft, one of the aerodynamically cleanest machines of its day. The KAI version made something quite different of it: Japanese aviation needed an interceptor against American bombers flying at great altitude, and so the Ki-46-III was given a reworked nose with cannon armament and an obliquely upward-firing gun behind the cockpit. It is precisely because of that conversion that the forward glazing differs from the purely reconnaissance version, and that is the difference the masking addresses directly on a model.
Mask the canopy frames only after the interior is finished and the glazing parts are glued in, so that the transition between the frame and the fuselage can be sanded in one go. Before painting, run a thin coat of clear over the joints around the glazing: that will reveal any gaps before an opaque color fills them. The glass itself stays clear, so protect the inner side of the canopy from overspray and handle the finished part with a glove on.
