This set from the Czech maker Hauler holds a cast resin engine for models of the Soviet KV series heavy tanks in 1:48 scale. It is not a model or a kit but an accessory meant for those who want an open engine compartment on a model. According to the name the set is shared between the KV-1 and the KV-2, which matches the fact that both machines shared the same power unit and the same rear layout.
A closed model shows only external shapes. An open engine deck, by contrast, is one of the most effective ways of turning a model into a scene, because it offers the viewer a look inside and naturally explains the presence of figures, tools and parts laid out around the vehicle. The KV series tanks were powered by a twelve-cylinder diesel, a massive unit that fills the engine compartment generously and looks credible once seated even without further work. An open rear can moreover be done on an otherwise finished model.
Wash the resin parts in warm water with detergent so that the release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the surfaces. Dry-fit the engine in the compartment before gluing; any packing or adjustment of the floor is easier done before it is glued in. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the engine separately, before it goes into the hull, or you will not reach the recesses. After the base color a dark wash in the hollows helps, then a fine dry brush on the edges and finally a few oily and greasy traces, because an engine compartment is a dirty place by its very nature. Leads and wiring can be added with thin wire.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
