A set of replacement wheels for a model of the B-29 Superfortress bomber in 1:48, made with sag in the tire where it touches the ground and matching the machines of early production. A wheel from a kit tends to be perfectly round, which looks unnatural on a heavy aircraft, and the tread pattern and the sidewall lettering on it tend to be shallow. The replacement part deals with both at once.
The B-29 Superfortress was an American four-engined heavy bomber from the end of the Second World War. For its day it had unusually advanced equipment, for example pressurized compartments for the crew. Its high takeoff weight placed exceptional demands on the landing gear and the tires, and their pattern changed during production, which is why the sets are offered separately for the individual periods. Choose the pattern by the machine you are building.
The parts are not polystyrene, so ordinary modeling cement does not apply to them. Cut the excess material and the traces of production off a little way from the part with a sharp blade and sand the remainder down on sandpaper laid on a flat board; keep checking that the contact patch stays flat. Wash in lukewarm water with dish soap before painting and let it dry. The sag has to point toward the ground when you glue the wheel on, or the whole point of the set falls away. Paint the carcass dark gray rather than black, set the hub apart and bring out the tread with dark toning. Sand with your airways protected.
