This is not a model of the aircraft but a replacement resin part. The set deals with the engine exhaust nozzle of an F-35A model in 1:48 scale, and in the closed position. The nozzle is one of the few places where a finished model can be seen into, so a lack of detail shows on it at once - plastic moldings tend to be shallow and to have a visible parting line.
The F-35A is the single-engined version of the multirole aircraft with conventional take-off and landing, powered by the F135 engine. One engine means one nozzle, which is precisely why the set is worked out as a single part. On the real machine the position of the nozzle petals changes with the regime of the powerplant, and that is why the manufacturer also offers a variant with the nozzle open - choose according to how you want to build and display the machine.
Wash the part in lukewarm soapy water, so that it is rid of the mold release agent. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the mating surface with a file, so that the nozzle sits on the centerline of the fuselage. Try the fit dry before gluing and adjust the diameter if need be. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Painting is the main discipline here: the surface of the nozzle differs markedly from the airframe around it, so metallic shades, a dark wash into the engraved lines and a fine dusting with pigments toward the rear all suit it. Apply metallic paints onto a smooth, well-prepared surface and at the very end, as they are harder to mask and to overspray.
This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
