A masking set for painting the cockpit glazing of this famous twin-boom fighter in 1:48 scale. There is no model or paint in the package; it is an accessory that handles a single but lengthy task: separating the cockpit frame from the clear surfaces accurately. According to the name of the set, the shapes are prepared for the outer as well as the inner side. The shapes of the individual pieces derive from the cockpit of the Tamiya kit.
The Lightning was unusual in its layout alone: two booms with the engines and turbochargers, a short nacelle between them with the pilot and the gun armament concentrated in the nose. The P-38J version received intercoolers moved under the engines, which showed as the characteristic chins beneath the propellers, and it became one of the most used forms of the type. The cockpit has a flat windscreen and side windows, so the framing consists mostly of straight edges, that is precisely the places where trimming tape by hand usually wanders.
Straight edges tempt you to hurry, but even here it pays to seat every shape separately and run firmly around its edge. Apply first the shade the frame is to have on the inside and then the exterior color. Give the paint time between coats; with a metallic look it is advisable to go really thin so that the pigment does not settle on the edge of the mask. Remove them shortly after setting and even out any overrun with the tip of a toothpick.
