It is not a kit of the aircraft but a package of accessories for one. The Big Ed line from the Czech company Eduard brings several of its separate sets for one model together, so the order does not have to be put together piece by piece. The exact make-up is stated by the manufacturer on the packaging and in the instructions.
The SR-71 is a twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft intended for long flight at high supersonic speed at great altitude. A structure of materials resistant to high temperatures, the blended transitions of the fuselage and the nacelles and the dark finish are characteristic of the type. In 1:48 scale it is a sizeable model on which every surface imperfection shows at once on the large smooth areas.
This model is specific because of its surface. The dark finish forgives nothing: sanded joints, fingerprints and inconsistent gloss stand out more than on camouflaged machines. So fit and fill the accessories before you start spraying, and wash the surfaces before painting. Photo-etched parts are cut from the fret with a scalpel, bent along the marked score line and glued with cyanoacrylate in tiny drops — every excess drop will stay visible on a smooth surface. If there are masks in the box, on the large cockpit glazing they save a great deal of time, and they are pulled off with tweezers only once the paint has dried. Finally unify the whole surface with one type of clear coat; mixing degrees of gloss is the most common reason a finished model of a dark aircraft looks inconsistent.
