A fret of photo-etched metal parts for building a 1:48 model of the Lockheed U-2S high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. It adds to the plastic kit in the places where thin metal catches the real thing better than a molded part. The code belongs to the more extensive photo-etched range that Eduard runs alongside the narrower Zoom sets.
The U-2 is a single-seat reconnaissance aircraft with long slender wings, built for flight at altitudes above twenty kilometers. The structure was subordinated to that down to the last detail: the landing gear is arranged in tandem along the fuselage centerline and during the takeoff run is supplemented by jettisonable outriggers under the wings, the pilot works in a pressure suit and the landing is directed from a car by a second pilot, because the machine behaves more like a glider. The designation U-2S belongs to a later form of a type that still serves in the reconnaissance role today.
A span of over thirty meters works out in 1:48 scale to more than sixty centimeters, so the finished model will take its share of a display case. It is with an area like that that refining the detail in metal is worth the effort. Separate the parts with a sharp blade, sand off the fret tab remnant and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), because polystyrene cement will not bond metal. Make the bends in a photo-etch bender and before painting wash the metal, degrease it and apply a primer.
