A masking set in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Armycast. The self-adhesive sheet holds machine-cut shapes of the period marking that was placed on the vertical tail surface of Luftwaffe aircraft (the so-called swastika). The set covers the early form of this marking. It is a modeling aid for spraying paint — not decals and not a kit. It is intended for building period-correct and historically accurate models of aircraft of the Second World War.
The template is stuck on the fin of the model and the paint is sprayed over it. The resulting marking is formed by the finish itself, so it has no carrier film: it does not catch the light, it does not silver and it has no visible edge. On the small and curved surfaces of a fin, where decals often wrinkle or tear, spraying is markedly more reliable. The marking also follows engraved lines and riveting and can be weathered, faded and scuffed just like the surrounding paint.
The fin has to be dry, smooth and degreased; on a grainy matte coat the edges of the mask do not seal. Transfer the template with tweezers, align it precisely against the trailing edge of the fin and the dividing gap of the rudder, and press the edges down carefully with a wooden stick. Spray several very thin coats at right angles to the surface — when sprayed at an angle the paint creeps under the edge. Let them dry in between. Lift the mask off soon after it has dried, pulling back over itself at a sharp angle, and check that no small inner cutout of the template has stayed behind in the finish.
The package holds masking templates only. Paints, varnish and the model are not part of it.
