A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the model of the fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor parts that would be glued into a model — it is an aid for painting that covers the surfaces that are to stay free of paint. The BASIC designation means the basic extent of the set in this range; the more comprehensive versions of the same subject cover a wider range of surfaces.

Why a mask instead of tape cut by hand

The cockpit frames of the Bf 109 are narrow and angular, and tracing them with a scalpel directly on the part is slow in 1:48 scale and rarely comes out symmetrical. A pre-cut mask respects the shape of the particular molding, so the edge of the paint is crisp and the same on both sides of the cockpit. The difference shows above all on multi-part glazing, where the same operation is repeated several times.

How to work with the masks

• Degrease the transparent part before masking and let it dry completely, as a mask does not hold on a greasy surface.
• Separate the mask from the backing sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers and do not touch the adhesive side with your fingers.
• Lay it on dry, line it up with the frame and only then press it down with a wooden stick all the way round.
• Apply the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat creates a step at the edge and creeps under more easily.
• Lift the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, as after a longer time the adhesive separates less easily.
