Pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the model of the J-15 in 1:48 scale, the EXPERT version. It is the widest extent this range offers for the subject. Nothing from the package is glued into the model; the contents are masks on a backing sheet only.

Where masking fits into the sequence of the build

Masking is not a discipline of its own but a step in a fixed sequence of work. First the model is built, filled and sanded, then the masks are applied and the interior shade and the primer are sprayed, and the top color and the camouflage follow. The masks come off before the clear coat, because a clear coat laid over their edge leaves a visible step once they are removed. Only then come the decals, the weathering and the final evening out of the sheen. Anyone who keeps to this sequence saves themselves most of the repairs.

Practical rules

• Apply the masks only to a completely dry, degreased and sanded surface.
• Lay the paint on in thin coats perpendicular to the surface, not at a sharp angle to the edge of the mask.
• Before taking them off, check that the last coat is dry to the touch.
• Take the masks off in the reverse order to the one in which you applied them.
• Repair any paint that has run under straight away with a brush, while you know exactly where it was.
