A set of machine-cut self-adhesive masks for the model of the shipboard helicopter Ka-27 in 1:48 scale. The masks are shaped to the parts of the particular Hobby Boss 81739 kit. The BASIC designation means the basic extent of the set, aimed at the main glazed areas, while the extended steps add further masking elements for some of the sets.

A helicopter and its glazing

On a helicopter masking is more demanding than on an airplane. The cockpit glazing is tall, curved and carries on down to the crew's feet, so self-adhesive tape crumples on the doubly curved surface. A cut mask is designed for the shape of the particular part, so it sits on the curve with no creases. In the large 1:48 scale, moreover, every uneven edge that cutting by hand would leave stands out.

The real subject

The Ka-27 is a twin-engine shipboard helicopter with a pair of coaxial contra-rotating main rotors. This layout does without a tail rotor, which shortens the overall length of the machine. The helicopter was designed for operation from ships, so it has folding rotor blades and a short fuselage.

Recommended procedure

• Wash the clear parts, degrease them and let them dry, and only then apply the masks.
• On curves lay the mask on from the middle toward the edges, not from one side.
• Press the transitions down with a wooden stick, as paint runs under an edge that has not been pressed down.
• Spray the interior shade first and the outer camouflage after it.
• Take the mask off once the paint has dried, while the finish has not cured completely.
• Store the unused sheet flat, as a bent sheet peels off badly.
