A 1:48 sheet for the British Phantom FG.1 and FGR.2 versions. Four aircraft from 1973 to 1983, three of them from squadrons stationed in West Germany.
Responsibility details are not available.
The four choices on the sheet belong to two British versions of the Phantom. The designations FG.1 and FGR.2 hide aircraft that differed considerably from the American original: instead of the original engines they received British powerplants of larger diameter, which meant the rear fuselage had to be widened, and a number of instruments were replaced by domestic production.
The first aircraft is FG.1 serial XT863 of No. 11 Squadron, a fighter unit from the Scottish airfield of Leuchars, captured as it looked at the air display at Greenham Common in 1983. The FG.1 version was originally created for carrier service and only came to land-based air defense after the Royal Air Force took the aircraft over from the navy.
The remaining three choices come from units in West Germany. Aircraft XT906 of No. 2 Squadron, which flew reconnaissance tasks for the ground forces, operated from Laarbruch in the mid-1970s. Aircraft XV413 belonged to No. 92 Squadron at Wildenrath and is dated July 1977. The last one, XT901, served with No. 17 Squadron at Bruggen air base in 1973.
British Phantoms went through several changes of finish and equipment during their service, so two schemes ten years apart mean two aircraft that look quite different. Before applying the decals it is therefore worth comparing the chosen scheme with a period photograph. The sheet contains decals only; the plastic parts and paints have to be obtained separately.
