An outer engine set for the MH-53E Sea Dragon in 1:48 scale from Black Dog covers the outer powerplant of this heavy naval helicopter.
Responsibility details are not available.
Black Dog has divided the engine equipment of the Sea Dragon up according to the position of the individual powerplants, and this item covers the outer one. Anyone who wants to go deep will reach for both versions in turn; anyone planning to open only one side of the fuselage will get by with this one.
The Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon is the naval version of the heavy Super Stallion, reworked for mine countermeasures with a device towed above the water. Its identifying marks are the massive sponsons on the sides of the fuselage, which hold a large fuel supply for long flights over the sea. The three engines and the seven-blade main rotor place it among the heaviest helicopters of Western manufacture of all.
A large model tempts you to start on everything at once, but with the engine section the opposite has proved itself: one area done properly looks better than three left half-finished. The exposed surfaces need both shadow and light so that they do not get lost on the broad fuselage. Weather the area around the cut-out lightly at the end, otherwise the new detail will look cleaner than the rest of the machine. Level the mating surfaces out before you set anything in, because even a small unevenness stands out on a large fuselage. Brush primer over the sanded area so that the final clear coat does not show a difference anywhere. And bear in mind that an exposed powerplant changes how the finished piece reads: a smooth giant shape turns into a machine on which the technicians' work can be seen.
Secure the heavy Sikorsky machine separately; this item only adds to it.
