About product

1:48 Mi-4 — Eduard painting masks for a model of the helicopter

A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the Mi-4 transport and multipurpose helicopter in 1:48 scale. The helicopter has extensive glazing of the pilots' cabin with a large number of frames, and windows in the fuselage on top of that — cutting tape by hand would take hours on it. The masks are peeled off the carrier film, stuck straight onto the clear part, and the frames are then sprayed together with the rest of the fuselage.

How to use the masks

First degrease the glazing and let it dry completely — a mask will not hold on a greasy surface and paint will creep underneath. Take the individual segments out with tweezers and lay them so that they line up with the engraving of the frame; then press them down all the way round with a soft tool or a toothpick. The glazed nose of the helicopter is curved, so lay the masks onto it piece by piece and keep checking the fit from a distance. The edge can be trimmed if need be with a new blade exactly along the outline of the frame. Cover the remaining areas of the model with ordinary masking tape.

Tips for painting and taking the masks off

It pays to spray the edge of the masks with the interior shade first — any creeping underneath will then blend into the inside of the cabin. Apply the exterior colors in several thin layers, because a thick coat will make a ridge at the edge of the mask, which will lift off along with the paint during removal. Take the masks off while the paint is freshly dried: lift a corner with tweezers and pull them slowly at a sharp angle, not straight up. Wipe any remains of adhesive off with a cotton bud and alcohol; an aggressive thinner might bite into the clear part.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Mi-4 helicopter in 1:48 scale
  • Those who want sharp and even frames without cutting tape by hand
  • Builders of helicopters with extensive cabin glazing
  • Modelers working with an airbrush as well as with a spray can

The set holds painting masks only. The model, paints and thinner are not included in the package. The masks are cut for a particular kit of the given type and scale — before buying, check that it matches your own.

FAQ

For the Mi-4 helicopter in 1:48 scale. The set is cut to the shape of its glazing.

This set is intended for masking from the outside. The manufacturer designates double-sided variants separately.

As soon as the paint is dry to the touch. After several days the adhesive holds more firmly and there is a risk that the paint will come away with the mask.

Lay it piece by piece and press it down around the edge between the individual segments. On markedly convex surfaces it helps to divide the mask into two parts with a cut.
