Decals 1:48 from the MiG-21 Around The World series, North Korea

This decal set from the brand Model Maker in 1:48 scale belongs to the series devoted to foreign users of the MiG-21 fighter and is aimed at machines operated in North Korea. Check the particular versions, fuselage numbers and the number of schemes against the illustration on the packaging.

The real subject

The MiG-21 is a single-engined fighter with a triangular wing, a nose air intake and a movable cone in its mouth. During production it went through a series of changes, which showed in the shape of the dorsal tank, the canopy and the armament. It was exported to many foreign users and its markings differ markedly from country to country, which is the subject of the whole decal series.

Preparing the surface and how the decals work with your own paintwork

Decals are applied to a surface you have painted yourself, and their color tone has to meet your paintwork. So it pays to prepare the surface in two steps: first spray the whole model with a filler primer, on which small scratches and joints that are not closed will show, and only after correcting them apply the paint. The primer also evens out the absorbency of the surface, so the shade sits the same on plastic, filler and any resin accessories. Before the decals come up, let the paint cure for several days; a fresh coat can react with the softener and soften along with the carrier film. Then come the gloss clear varnish, the decals, the softener and finally the unifying overcoat. Anyone who skimps on this preparation usually struggles with it later, over motifs that silver or peel.
