About product

F.O.D. photo-etched set for the MiG-23MF in 1:48 scale from Eduard

This is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory in photo-etched metal for a kit in 1:48 scale. The abbreviation F.O.D. comes from the English term for engine damage caused by a foreign object. On a real aircraft, covers are therefore fitted over the air intakes of a parked machine and the ground crew takes them off before takeoff. As its own name states, the set is designed for use with the resin air intake set from the Brassin range, so the thin metal parts follow the shape of the casting and close off its mouth. Eduard is a Czech maker of photo-etched parts, masks and accessories, based in Obrnice near Most.

The real subject

The MiG-23MF was the export version of the Soviet fighter with a variable-geometry wing. Machines of this line served in the air forces of the Warsaw Pact states, Czechoslovakia among them, and the side air intakes are among the most conspicuous elements of their silhouette. Covered intakes therefore give away at first glance that the model represents a machine parked on an airfield apron rather than an aircraft in the air.

Fitting and painting tips

Separate the parts with a scalpel or photo-etch scissors against a hard surface, and never break them out. Make the folds in a bending tool or between two blades so that the edge is sharp. Degrease the metal before painting and go over it with a primer, otherwise the paint cracks and flakes off. It is glued with cyanoacrylate or thin epoxy, as cement for plastic will not hold on metal. On real equipment, intake covers tend to be conspicuously colorful so that the ground crew cannot overlook them.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the MiG-23 in 1:48 scale who are preparing the model as a machine standing on the ground
  • modelers who already have the resin air intake set and want to finish it
  • anyone interested in a diorama of an airfield apron with ground crew
  • builders with basic experience of bending and gluing photo-etched parts

The set is an accessory to a kit and comes unpainted. Glue, paints and the kit itself are not included in the package.

FAQ

It comes from the English term for engine damage caused by a foreign object. The set represents the covers fitted over the air intakes of a parked aircraft.

It is not. It is an add-on set of photo-etched parts to be used on a kit in 1:48 scale that you have already bought.

The set is designed precisely for it, as its own name states. Without the matching resin intakes, seating the parts may take more work.

With cyanoacrylate or thin epoxy. Conventional cement for plastic does not dissolve metal, so the joint will not hold.
