Six MiG-23 machines in the late MLD standard in a larger scale. The Afghan deployment and later garrison service from 1988 onward.
Responsibility details are not available.
A design with a wing whose sweep the pilot set in flight was meant to combine a short takeoff with high speed. The road to a usable fighter, however, led through several generations of changes, and only the late MLD standard received reworked leading-edge aerodynamics, a lighter airframe and updated avionics. That turned an originally unwieldy aircraft into an opponent that did considerably better in a turning fight.
Six machines span the range from 1988 past the turn of the millennium. Several of them served during the Afghan campaign with a fighter regiment operating from Bagram airfield, others are captured at a base in the Transbaikal region. On one of the subjects it is noted that after repair and renumbering the stars marking combat sorties, which the machine had carried earlier on its nose, were not restored. Details like these are what turn a model into a particular aircraft rather than just a type.
The 1:48 scale is a rewarding one for this type. The machine is large in itself, so the model comes out impressively and there is enough room on it even for the small technical lettering. A variable-geometry wing means that you decide in advance in which position you will fix it, because the seating of the decals at the wing root differs accordingly.
The package contains only the printed sheet; neither a model nor paints are in it. Anyone building an aircraft from the Afghan period should expect the lower surfaces to be heavily caked with dust, because operating from the runways there left marks on the machines within a few days.
