About product

Printed Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero cockpit in 1:48 scale from Eduard

This is an accessory set, not a kit of the aircraft. It consists of a cockpit assembly made by 3D printing in resin, which is fitted into a plastic model of the Japanese A6M3 carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. Printing allows finer detail than an injection mold can manage: sharper edges on the instrument panel, thin seat frames and raised controls.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A6M was a single-engine carrier fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The A6M3 version was given the Nakajima Sakae 21 engine with a single-stage two-speed supercharger. The first configuration of this version had clipped square wingtips, while the later one returned to the original rounded shape. The cockpit on this type was fairly cramped and with the canopy slid back it is clearly visible on a model, so the working-out of the interior has a large share in the final impression.

Building and painting tips

Working with resin. Wash the parts first in lukewarm water with detergent so that uncured resin residue is gone. Cut the print supports off with a saw or a sharp knife, never break them off. Sanding is better done wet, and dry only with respiratory protection, because resin dust must not be inhaled. It is bonded with super glue; ordinary plastic cement will not join resin. Apply a primer before painting, otherwise the paint holds badly on the smooth printed surface. The interior stands out when, after the base color, you emphasize the recesses with a dark wash and the edges with a dry brush.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who build the A6M3 in 1:48 scale with an open cockpit
  • more experienced builders with experience of resin and super glue
  • anyone who finds the plastic interior from the kit too little detailed
  • for improving a model for a display case or for a competition

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check before buying that the set fits your kit.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory cockpit set that you fit into a plastic A6M3 kit in 1:48 scale. The model itself is not included in the package.

With super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Ordinary cement for polystyrene does not dissolve resin, so the joint will not hold.

Yes. Wash them in lukewarm water with detergent to remove uncured resin residue, cut the print supports off and apply a primer. Without a base the paint rubs off a printed surface easily.
