A set of masking stencils for the control surfaces of a model, that is for the ailerons, the elevator and the rudder and the flaps. The manufacturer lists it in a series designated Optical Illusion, and it is intended for the Tamiya kit in 1:48 scale.
On a real aircraft the control surfaces are separate parts hinged on the fixed structure. On a model their outline is often only an engraved line, which after spraying and a clear coat almost disappears. The stencils define the outline, so a fine spraying through them can accentuate the gap and the shade of a surface. The result comes across as if the surface were separate, without your having to cut it off and glue it back on.
The N1K1 Kyofu was a Japanese single-seat floatplane fighter of the Second World War, carried among the Allies under the name Rex. The land-based Shiden fighter later came out of it. Its control surfaces and ailerons were covered with fabric, so on a finished model it is worth setting them apart in shade as well.
Apply the stencils to dried and degreased paint, press the edges down carefully and spray in several thin coats, otherwise the paint runs under. Choose a shade only slightly different from the base color; a large difference looks unnatural on a model. The exact procedure is in the instructions with the set.
The package contains the masking stencils alone. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
