1:48 ODAB-500PMV

The real subject

The ODAB-500PMV is a Soviet aircraft bomb of the 500 kilogram weight class that differs from an ordinary high-explosive bomb in the principle of its effect. Instead of a solid explosive it carries a flammable charge: after release this is first dispersed into the surroundings as an aerosol and only then ignited. The resulting blast wave covers a considerably larger area than the explosion of a conventional bomb of the same weight and reaches into trenches, cellars and other places sheltered against fragments. That is exactly why bombs of this kind were used against field fortifications and targets in open ground. The letters and digits at the end of the designation distinguish the individual renditions within the family.

What the set offers

This is an accessory for aircraft models in 1:48 scale. Underwing ordnance is what gives a finished model its purpose: empty pylons under the wings look unfinished, whereas a bomb on a pylon hints at the task the machine was flying.

Building and painting tips

Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down so that the body of the bomb stays smooth and the stabilizing fins straight. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, and choose the glue according to their material. Paint the bomb separately and hang it on a finished model, as you will then reach under the wing more easily. The color markings and bands differed from one example to another, so start from the references for the particular machine you are building.

Who it is for

For modelers of Soviet and Russian aircraft in 1:48 scale who want to equip a model with underwing ordnance. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
