Stencils for spraying the radar absorbent panels on the F-35A Lightning II. Cut for 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lightning II is inconspicuous not only in shape. Around covers, doors and seams it carries strips of a special surface that absorbs the arriving radiation instead of reflecting it back to the radar. On the real aircraft these strips differ from the surrounding gray finish by a fine difference of gloss and shade, and it is they that give the machine its characteristic mottled look.
The subject here is not a camouflage pattern in the usual sense. These are precisely bounded rectangles, trapezoids and narrow borders led around openings, which have to follow the engraving on the part exactly. If a border shifts, the eye immediately sees that the strip does not agree with the panel line underneath it and the whole effect falls apart.
The gray base of the aircraft is also not equally saturated everywhere. The upper surfaces tend to be noticeably darker than the underside and the boundary between them is soft, which complements the hard-bounded strips nicely: one transition stays blurred, the other cut.
Apply the base gray coat in the usual way and let it cure properly. Then stick the shapes on and overspray the area with a second shade that differs only slightly from the base. The difference should be barely noticeable; an exaggerated contrast looks unconvincing on a finished model.
A matte or, conversely, a semi-matte varnish applied only over the exposed areas does good service too. That creates a different gloss without any change of color, which is closest to reality.
In the package you will find exclusively cut shapes, not paints or a model of the aircraft.
