A scenic accessory for dioramas in 1:48 scale. It represents a sideboard, that is a low cabinet with a top to set things on, of the kind that stands against the wall in a parlor, a kitchen or a dining room. The accessory is not a kit of an aircraft or a vehicle — it is a stand-alone piece of equipment for a scene, set into the finished interior of a diorama.
Interior scenes tend to be the weaker point in modeling, because it is hard to find objects that really furnish a room. Furniture against a wall is the first thing a viewer notices: it gives a room scale, fills the otherwise empty area behind the figures and creates a surface on which you can go on with further small things. A sideboard works in a country house, in a barrack room, in a requisitioned house turned into a headquarters and in a civilian flat. In a damaged building it can be tilted or overturned — such a use often looks more striking in a diorama than standing it in place.
Cut the casting off the casting block with a fine-toothed saw, sand the cut back and wash the part in lukewarm soapy water before painting. Ordinary plastic cement does not hold on resin parts — use cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Lay down a thin primer and build the wood up in layers: a dark base, thin lighter strokes along the grain over it and finally a dark wash into the joints and around the doors. Pick the fittings and handles out with a dry brush in a metallic shade. If the sideboard is to look like varnished furniture, go over the surfaces with a thin coat of satin varnish; a matte surface, on the other hand, suits untreated wood. Dust the lower edges with a pigment to match the floor it stands on.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
