About product

Sopwith F.1 Camel (Bentley) 1:48, a kit from Eduard

An injection-molded plastic kit of the single-seat Sopwith F.1 Camel fighter in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard. The qualifier in the name refers to the version with the Bentley rotary engine: the Camel was built with several types of rotary engine and the individual boxings differ according to the powerplant, so it is exactly this detail that decides the choice. The model belongs to Eduard's simpler Weekend line; the exact contents of the box and the number of color schemes offered are on the packaging.

The real subject

The Camel was a British single-seat fighter used at the close of the First World War. Its distinctive silhouette came from the fairing over the pair of synchronized Vickers machine guns in front of the pilot, which also gave it its nickname. The engine, the armament, the fuel and the pilot were all concentrated in the short forward part of the fuselage, which gave the aircraft exceptional agility but at the same time made heavy demands on the pilot. The Bentley rotary engine was among the powerplants the Camel was built with.

Building and painting tips

Build a biplane in this order: cockpit, fuselage, lower wing and only then the struts with the upper wing. To set the angles, prepare a simple jig or use clothespins and blocks so that the model dries square. Glue the plastic with thin cement with a capillary action and the struts with a minimal amount. Put a primer on the base, spray the fabric surfaces with an airbrush in thin coats and suggest the wooden parts with an oil glaze over a light base. Give the area a gloss coat before the decals and even the surface out with a matte coat once dry. Fit the bracing of drawn thread or fine wire right at the very end.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in First World War aircraft in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who want a biplane with a striking silhouette and interesting colors.
  • Builders with basic experience of struts and bracing.
  • Collectors who are putting together a run of Camel versions by powerplant.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

In the powerplant. The Camel was built with several types of rotary engine and the individual boxings differ accordingly in the shape of the engine, the cowling and the colors. Versions with a different engine also exist.

It is a biplane with struts and bracing, so it calls for some patience. A modeler with basic experience will manage it; a complete beginner should count on a slower pace.

Check the number of schemes on the packaging and in the kit instructions.

Cement for plastic, a primer, paints and material for the bracing. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
