About product

Sopwith F.1 Camel (Bentley) Weekend 1:48 - a pre-painted photo-etched set from Eduard

A photo-etched set printed in color from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for the Sopwith F.1 Camel biplane in the version with the Bentley rotary engine. The Zoom range designation means a smaller set, varnished at the factory and aimed at the most exposed parts of the cockpit, unlike the full photo-etched sets, which also add structural and exterior parts without color. The Weekend in the name says that the set is cut for the simplified edition of the kit from the same manufacturer, which has no photo-etched parts in the box.

The real subject

The Sopwith Camel was a British single-seat fighter biplane from the end of the First World War. The F.1 version was built with several types of rotary engine, and the guise with the Bentley engine differs from the others in the shape of the engine cowling and in the details of its mounting. The cockpit was tight, the instrument panel simple and most of the equipment stayed in view, so small accessories really do tell on a finished model.

Pre-painted parts: what is not painted over

Printed surfaces are on no account oversprayed. The color print on an etching is very thin and any opaque coat will reduce the legibility of the dials and the lettering. Working with such a set therefore looks different from working with a bare brass sheet: the part is cut off, straightened and glued on, and nothing more. A proven method is to put a drop of gloss varnish into the dials to give the impression of glass covers, and to even the rest of the space out with a matte varnish laid on away from the printed surfaces. They are glued only after the surrounding plastic is sprayed, with a minimal dose of cyanoacrylate or with a varnish-based glue meant for photo-etched metal.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a quick improvement to the cockpit without painting small details
  • Builders of the simplified edition of the kit, which has no photo-etched parts
  • Anyone interested in First World War aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Newcomers to photo-etched metal, because a pre-painted set is more forgiving than a bare brass sheet

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched accessory for the cockpit. The Sopwith Camel kit itself in 1:48 scale has to be bought separately.

Not the printed surfaces, because the color is printed at the factory. Only the surrounding plastic is painted, so that it follows on from the shade of the set.

A minimal dose of cyanoacrylate or a special varnish-based glue for photo-etched metal. Ordinary plastic cement does not hold on metal.

The Zoom range is a smaller selection aimed at the cockpit and is varnished at the factory. The full sets also hold parts without color, which have to be sprayed.
