About product

Sopwith F.1 Camel (Clerget) 1:48 (Eduard)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary British fighter biplane in 1:48 scale from the Czech brand Eduard. The qualifier in the name specifies the power plant of the subject: this is a Camel with the Clerget rotary engine, which shows in the shape of the engine cowling and in the details of the nose. The model is meant to be glued and painted; check the contents of the package and the marking options on the packaging.

The real subject

The Sopwith F.1 Camel was a single-seat fighter biplane of British manufacture, in service from 1917. It got its nickname from the hump of the fairing over the pair of machine guns ahead of the cockpit. The engine, the fuel, the armament and the pilot were all concentrated in a short forward fuselage, which gave the aircraft exceptional agility but also a sharp behavior in turns that pilots had to get used to. The Clerget rotary engine was, alongside the Bentley and Le Rhone types, one of the power plants the Camel was built with, and the individual versions differ from one another precisely in the nose.

Building and painting tips

Finish the cockpit and the internal structure of the fuselage first; once the halves are glued together, working on them is difficult. Glue the wings on a jig or on a flat surface, so that the dihedral and the stagger of the flying surfaces are right. Classic fabric stretched over a wooden frame is well imitated with a matte acrylic and a light emphasis on the ribs. The most demanding part is the rigging between the wings: use a taut elastic thread or stretched sprue and pre-drill the holes before painting. The rotary engine comes into its own when you darken it over a base metal color and polish the edges lightly.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in First World War aviation
  • Modelers who want to try rigging a biplane
  • Collectors working in a single 1:48 scale
  • More experienced builders who will appreciate fine parts and small dimensions

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The real aircraft differed in the type of rotary engine and in the shape of the nose. According to its name, this kit focuses on the version with the Clerget engine.

Kits do not usually contain material for the rigging; check the contents on the packaging. Most modelers use elastic thread or stretched sprue.

It is a more demanding build. The small parts, the clear pieces and above all the rigging between the wings call for some practice.

No, it is supplied as a kit to be glued and painted. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
