About product

Spitfire F Mk. IXc Weekend 1:48, an Eduard photo-etched set

A photo-etched set in 1:48 scale for a model of the Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.IXc fighter. It is not a kit of an aircraft but an accessory that raises the detail of a model, above all in the cockpit. The Weekend designation refers to the simplified boxed edition from the same maker, which does not have photo-etched parts in its basic contents: the set is its intended complement. It is made by the Czech brand Eduard from Obrnice near Most.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.IX arose as a quick answer to the appearance of new enemy fighters: a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine with a two-stage two-speed supercharger was fitted into the airframe of the previous variant, which markedly improved performance at greater altitudes. Its recognition features are a longer nose and a pair of exhaust stacks with six outlets. The letter c marks what is called the universal wing, which allowed various combinations of cannon and machine gun armament. The F variant was optimized for medium and high altitudes.

Building and painting tips

Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and bend them in a bending tool or between two razor blades. They are glued with cyanoacrylate in a really small amount: apply it with a toothpick, as any excess turns white. Sand away the plastic details the photo-etch replaces completely first, otherwise the part will not sit down. Do not overspray color printed surfaces across their whole area and protect them from thinners; a final light coat of matte varnish will even the sheen of the whole cockpit out. On the Spitfire it pays to finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Spitfire Mk.IX in 1:48 scale
  • Owners of simplified editions with no photo-etch in their contents
  • Those who want to finish a model with the canopy open
  • Modelers with experience of photo-etch and cyanoacrylate

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It marks what is called the universal wing, which allowed various combinations of cannon and machine gun armament. On a photo-etched set, however, it is a designation of the subject, not a difference in the contents of the package.

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory for a model. The 1:48 Spitfire kit has to be bought separately.

A sharp scalpel, a hard surface, tweezers and cyanoacrylate will do. A photo-etch bending tool makes the work easier, and on simpler parts two razor blades stand in for it.
