Masking set for the Spitfire Mk.IX in 1:48 scale. It contains double-sided cut-outs for the canopy, two national marking masks and a decal sheet.
Responsibility details are not available.
When German fighters with a radial engine appeared over the Channel, the Royal Air Force needed a quick answer. It came from installing a supercharged engine with a two-stage supercharger into the airframe of the Mk.V, which lengthened the nose and added a second radiator under the wing. The cockpit glazing stayed almost unchanged, so the same assembly is masked as on the predecessor: the windscreen, the domed sliding section and the rear glazing.
The set offers two sets of canopy cut-outs, that is the outside and the inside. It pays off on a model with the canopy slid back or with the side door open, where the inner edge of the frame is right in view. Two masks for spraying the roundels belong to the canopy, and decals on top of that, so the package covers both the shape and the color markings.
It served with practically all the Allied air forces, from Czechoslovak squadrons through Polish ones to American units in Italy, and lived on in postwar service in Israel and in Yugoslavia. The range of finishes is therefore unusually wide and one canopy mask will serve for a whole series of different builds one after another.
The set does not cover glue or paint, so prepare those in advance. The recommended procedure does not change with these cut-outs: a clean and degreased surface, pressure from the center toward the edge, two very thin coats of covering paint and removal before the film has fully cured. Anyone masking for the first time should start with the largest part, because that one forgives the most.
