About product

Resin landing gear doors for the Spitfire Mk.I, 1:48 (Quickboost)

This is not a kit of an aircraft but replacement resin landing gear doors for a model of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I in 1:48 scale. Because of the injection molding process, plastic doors tend to be thicker than the subject warrants, and on a displayed model they are nevertheless easy to see, because the model stands on its gear at the viewer's eye level. A thin resin casting removes this shortcoming without the laborious sanding down of the original parts. Quickboost is the accessory range of the Czech maker Aires.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was a British single-seat fighter with an elliptical wing and a Merlin engine, which made its name in the Battle of Britain. Its main landing gear retracted outwards into the wing and was completed by doors attached to the gear legs. The track of the wheels was fairly narrow on the type, which made demands on the pilot while taxiing and landing. It is precisely the details of the landing gear that are among the elements on a model that most give away the quality of the build, because the viewer sees them from close up.

Usage and painting tips

Wash the castings in warm water with a drop of detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and true the surface up on abrasive paper. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. The thin parts are fragile, so handle them with tweezers and glue them with a gel cyanoacrylate glue. Before gluing, check the seating angle dry, so that the doors lie in one plane with the gear leg. Paint after a primer has gone on; the inner faces of the doors usually differ in shade from the outer ones, which is worth checking against the documentation for the particular machine.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building early versions of the Spitfire in 1:48 scale
  • Those bothered by plastic landing gear doors that are too thick
  • Builders of competition models displayed on the landing gear
  • Modelers with basic experience of handling small parts

These are accessory parts, not a model of an aircraft. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Injection-molded plastic has a technologically given minimum thickness, so the doors look oversized. A resin casting can be markedly thinner and therefore matches the subject better.

It is not. These are replacement parts for an already purchased plastic model in 1:48 scale. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

They call for careful handling with tweezers and gluing with a gel cyanoacrylate glue. Once glued to the gear leg they are strong enough for ordinary display.

After a primer has gone on. On a number of machines the inner and outer faces of the doors differ in shade, so check the color scheme against the documentation for the particular aircraft.
