About product

Aires 1:48 Spitfire Mk.I wheels (5-Spoke) and paint masks

This detail set from the Czech manufacturer Aires replaces the main wheels of a plastic kit of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I in 1:48 scale. The resin castings have a sharper tread pattern, more legible lettering on the sidewall and a truer shape of the five-spoke hub used on early Spitfires. According to the product name the package also contains masks for painting, with which you separate the hub from the tire without laborious brushwork and without a ragged transition. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory for a model you already have.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was the first production version of the British single-seat fighter with an elliptical wing. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine and carried eight 7.7 mm machine guns in the wing. Together with Hurricanes, machines of this version formed the backbone of the fighter defense during the summer and autumn campaign of 1940. Early Spitfires had main wheels with a five-spoke hub, which was later replaced by a four-spoke form, so choosing the right type of wheel is one of the details that tell an early machine from a later one.

Building and painting tips

Wash the wheels in warm soapy water, so that no mold release agent stays on them. On wheels the casting block tends to be placed on the contact surface of the tire, so cutting it off leaves you with a naturally flattened footprint; when sanding, take care that it stays perpendicular to the axle. Stick the mask on the hub and spray the tire dark gray, not black, because black looks unnatural in scale. Once dry, take the mask off and finish the hub in the shade that matches the machine you have chosen. Finally, weather the wheels lightly with dust pigment, so that they do not look factory fresh.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of early Spitfires in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers bothered by the soft detail of the kit wheels
  • Those who appreciate ready-made masks and a clean hub-to-tire transition
  • Anyone interested in telling the early and the later variant of the aircraft apart precisely

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is an accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, the product name states them directly. They serve to separate the hub from the tire while spraying, so laborious brushwork falls away.

Early machines with a five-spoke hub, that is, above all the Mk.I. Later versions used a different hub form, so check the type of wheel on the particular machine against a reference photograph.

On resin wheels the casting block tends to be placed on the contact surface itself, so once it is sanded away the footprint arises naturally.
