Steel photo-etched seat belts in 1:48 scale for the cockpit of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V fighter. It is not a kit of an aircraft but a detail accessory: it replaces the plastic or decal belts of the base kit and gives the seat a convincing look. The maker is the Czech brand Eduard from Obrnice near Most, where steel belts make up a separate, long-running range.
The Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerously built variant of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter in the first half of the Second World War. It arose by fitting the airframe of the previous variant with a more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine of the 45 series, and it served in a very wide range of modifications, from full-span wings through clipped wings for combat at low altitude to tropical versions with a dust filter under the nose. Thanks to its side door and hinged canopy the cockpit of the Spitfire is easy to see on a finished model, so detail inside pays off.
Steel photo-etch is springy and holds its shape after bending, so a belt can be draped over the edge of the seat or left to hang loose down its side, and that is exactly what sets a well built cockpit apart from one out of the box. Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and bend them in a bending tool or between razor blades. Glue with cyanoacrylate in a minimal amount, applied with a toothpick. Protect any color printing from thinners, and even the surface out at the end with a matte varnish. If you tone the cockpit with a wash, run it only into the corners, not over the surface of the belts.
This is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
